Livelihoods and Financial Services

The nature of work has changed greatly over the past few decades. So have financial services. To better understand how today’s financial services intersect with people’s changing livelihoods, CGAP is researching how the digital economy and digital financial services create income-generating opportunities for three segments of workers who together constitute a large majority of workers in emerging markets: micro and small entrepreneurs and their employees, women with rural and agricultural livelihoods, and the small but growing segment of platform workers. Based on our initial research, this blog series traces the knowns and unknowns, opportunities and risks, that financial services present for these segments, and describes our upcoming research in this critical area.
