Sharmista Appaya has more than 15 years of experience in data, finance, and digital development. She currently leads the World Bank's AI Business line, focusing on creating safe, inclusive digital infrastructures that leverage AI for responsible impact. She believes in bridging technological, economic, and social divides, trusting that innovation can drive equitable growth.

Previously, she was a Senior Financial Sector Specialist in the Finance, Competitiveness, and Innovation Global Practice, analyzing fintech's role in financial inclusion. Before joining the World Bank, she led the Fintech Accelerator at the Bank of England.
